Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there any limit to the depth of a borehole log?

No, a borehole log can start at any depth and finish at any depth. The program will automatically calculate how many pages are required to display the log.

2. How many lithologic layers can a borehole log have?

Each borehole log can have an unlimited number of layers.

3. How many lithologic symbols can be used?

Lithologic symbols are contained in symbol libraries. There can be an unlimited number of symbol libraries, and each library contains 18 symbols.

4. How many soil/rock samples can be specified for a borehole log?

Each borehole log can have an unlimited number of samples.

5. Can metric and imperial units be used for a borehole log?

Either metric or imperial units can be used to enter data in a borehole log, the units to use is set in the template. The units displayed in a depth or elevation column can be different then the units used for data input, the program will automatically convert the units for display.

6. How many wells or piezometers can be shown on a borehole log?

An unlimited number of wells or piezometers can be drawn on each borehole log. There are three methods with varying levels of complexity that can be used to draw wells.

7. How many graphs can be shown on a borehole log?

An unlimited number of graphs can be shown on a borehole log. These graphs can be used to represent concentrations, shear strength, RQI, SPT, SP, water content, etc.

8. Can a company logo be included in a template?

Yes, company logos that are stored as bitmaps can be placed anywhere on a template.

9. Can a site plan be included in a template?

Site plans stored as bitmaps can be displayed anywhere on a template.

10. What printers does the program support?

The program uses the printers installed with Windows to print the borehole logs, and thus any printer supported by Windows can be used with the program.

11. Can the borehole log be exported to the clipboard or a bitmap file?

Yes, the borehole logs can be exported to the clipboard or to a bitmap file.

12. Can the borehole log be exported to AutoCAD format?

The borehole logs can be exported to AutoCAD DXF format. This format does not support bitmaps, so none of the bitmap symbols in the log will be exported. Instead of DXF format, the logs can be exported as bitmaps that can then be imported into AutoCAD.

13. How many points can be shown on a graph?

Each graph can have an unlimited number of points. The display of these points can be completely customized in the template.

14. Can geophysical logs be shown on the borehole log?

If the geophysical module is purchased, an unlimited number of geophysical logs can be imported into a borehole log. Several popular file formats can be read by the program including ASCII, LAS, Schlumberger LAS, and Mount Sopris.

15. What format are the borehole logs saved in?

All of the borehole logs, templates, and legends are stored in Microsoft Access databases. A more detailed discussion of the database structure is provided at the end of this chapter.

16. Can the borehole log be printed in color and black and white?

Yes, the borehole log can be printed in color or black and white depending upon the printer being used.

17. Can the depth scale of a borehole log be changed?

The depth scale of a borehole log is set in the template, which can be overridden within each borehole log.

18. Can an aboveground cover or well “stick-up” be shown on a borehole log?

An aboveground cover can be shown by specifying a negative (above ground surface) start depth for the log.
