Calculations

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The following calculations are used in this test:

Maximum Specific Gravity

SGmax = A / [A - (C - B)]        .        bowl under water

SGmax = A / [A + D - E]                bowl in air

SGmax = A / [A + F - G]                flask

where,

SGmax        = Maximum specific gravity

A        = Mass of dry specimen in air

B        = Mass of bowl under water

C        = Mass of bowl and specimen under water

D        = Mass of lid and bowl with water

E        = Mass of lid, bowl, specimen, and water

F        = Mass of cover plate and flask filled with water

G        = Mass of cover plate, flask, specimen, and water

Density

ρ = SGmax * ρw

where,

ρ        = Density

ρw        = Density of water at 25°C (0.9970 g/cm3)
