The following calculations are used in this test:

Initial Water Content

w = [(Mw - Md) / (Md - Mc)] * 100

where,

w        = Initial water content

Mw        = Mass of coated dish and wet soil

Md        = Mass of coated dish and dry soil

Mc        = Mass of coated dish

Dry Soil Volume

V0 = (MHg - Mc) / γHg

where,

V0        = Dry soil volume

MHg        = Mass of mercury and dish

γHg        = Unit mercury mass

Shrinkage Limit

SL = w -100 * (V - V0) * ρw / (Md - Mc)

where,

SL        = Shrinkage limit

V        = Volume of wet soil

ρw        = Density of water (1.0 g/cm3)

Shrinkage Ratio

R = (Md - Mc) / (V0 * ρw)

where,

R        = Shrinkage ratio

Linear Shrinkage

LS = 100 * [1 - (VO / V) 1/3]

where,

LS        = Linear shrinkage
